Known Fertility factors frequently treated by Acupuncture include:

Acupuncture assists with stimulating blood flow to the ovaries which helps increase the quality of ovarian egg supply. Blood flow is also directed to the Uterus which helps with the production of a thick, rich Endometrium (Uterus lining) and in conjunction hormones are regulated.

All this helps make your body more receptive to pregnancy and increases your chances of falling pregnant and as well maintaining a healthy pregnancy.

Male Fertility factors can also benefit from Acupuncture. We can assist with both sperm motility and quality issues: Beneficial for Male function, erectile, libido and prostate issues are all shown to improve with regular Acupuncture treatment. 

Research of 40 men presenting with abnormalities (oligospermia, asthenospermia, or teratozoospermia). 28 received Acupuncture treatment on a twice weekly basis for 5 week’s then semen sample taken and analysed. After the course of Acupuncture treatment semen showed improvement in morphology, numbers and percentage of live sperm. [Fertility and Sterility. 2005; 84: 141-147]

Fertility patients can also generally benefit from stress reduction and emotional support, something else Acupuncture can offer during a time which is often an often emotional roller coaster.

I'm a member of Wellington Fertility, Acupuncture and childbirth team which has allowed me to work onsite at Fertility Associates for over 4 years providing Acupuncture for their patients before and after embryo transfer, as this has shown (through below research) to increase the chances of pregnancy. I’m currently a trial practitioner in a large scale 2 year study under Sydney University looking at IVF pregnancy rates whilst receiving Acupuncture treatment.

A study conducted in Colorado Reproductive and Fertility clinic divided 114 woman into either control or intervention group which received Acupuncture before and after their embryo transfer. The results for the Acupuncture treatment group showed:

•A 51% pregnancy rate compared to 36% in control group

•A 8% miscarriage rate compared to 20% in control group

Acupuncture benefit beyond that was shown to increase the live birth rate by 23%

A similar trial looking at Acupuncture before and after embryo transfer dividing 225 women into a control and Acupuncture group, results showed:

• 36.6% postive pregnancy result compared to 15.6% (control group).

• Continued pregnancy rate of 28.4% compared to 18.4%.
